the website of writer/editor Ellen Larson
I got my first full-time editing job working as a Publications Specialist (language, substantive, and developmental editing) for the National Agricultural Research Project in Egypt in 1991. Minutes, quarterly reports, annual reports, newsletters, promotional literature, scientific papers; working with artists, graphic designers, and printersI did it all, for NARP, and for the other projects in Egypt, the Middle East, and Africa the next fifteen years. More than that, working with non-native writers gave me an extraordinary appreciation for the intent of the writer, for the meaning behind the words--no matter how awkwardly those words might be used.
Please take a look at my freelance client list.
I would be happy to quote on your editing job. Please send me an email with the specifics.
Since 1999, I have worked with an increasing number of fiction writers as a substantive editor (or writing coach). The craft of storytelling remains my first love--I studied literary theory for my BA and my MA, and wrote book and theatrical reviews during the 1980s. As a fiction writer myself (my first short story was published in 1973 in Yankee Magazine), I understand all too well the needs and concerns of this special breed of writer. In 2002, I began working with the fine folks as Poisoned Pen Press as a substantive editor.
I invite you to take a look at the links on the left to learn more about what I do as a fiction editor. Because it is such a leap of faith for a writer to hire an editor, I offer a free trial, so that you will get an idea of what I do.
